When Latvian peasants were freed from serfdom in the 19th century, they were able to choose surnames. Officially, they were supposed to choose Latvian names, but many did not. Many chose Germanic or Slavic-sounding names in an attempt to raise their social standing. A Germanic name thus does not necessarily mean Germanic origins. Latvian surnames of Germanic origin are listed below.
