The eastern province of Latvia, called Latgale, spent most of history more closely associated with Poland or Russia than the rest of Latvia, which was predominantly under German influence. As a result, Latgale has a different dialect and some different naming traditions than the rest of Latvia. Surnames that are particular to Latgale are found in this category. If you are looking for surnames that are related to surnames in standard Latvian, but that have Latgalian spelling variants, see the category: Surnames with Latgalian variants.
