When Latvian peasants were freed from serfdom in the 19th century, they were able to choose surnames. Officially, they were supposed to choose Latvian names, but many did not. Many chose Germanic or Slavic-sounding names in an attempt to raise their social standing. A Slavic name thus does not necessarily mean Slavic origins. Latvian surnames of Slavic origin are listed below.

Due to similarities between Slavic languages, all Slavic surnames are grouped here, since many are not specific to one language. When a specific language origin is known, it is mentioned in the surname description.
